Wait! That's not a tomato plant is it? If it was -- I'd say that's the work of a hornworm. But the bottom photo doesn't look like a tomato leaf. That might be a leaf-cutter bee at work.
I have one sunflower that looks similar, but the edges of the holes are less jagged. This morning I found the culprit...she was a lovely pale green caterpillar (about the same green as a hornworm) and about an inch long. I don't know what she was, though. She didn't live long enough to introduce herself.
Wow! Really? They haven't touched mine Greg. Course, I'm still feeding the little buggers too -- regularly I might add. Do you know where replacement socks can be had? Those make for the best feeders...
The finches did go after the peach tree pretty badly when I forgot to refill the feeder a couple of times -- but they've left everything else alone.
The feed store in Loomis still sells the big yellow ones. I only have a few pairs of finches around and they've been hammering those leaves. They were eating the seeds of the spent sunflowers out front but have not lately. I've only seen them on my socks once or twice.

ReplyDeleteThe finches did this. They've done it to quite a few sunflower plants. I do not know why as I have quite a few plants they're eating seed off of.
